So while talking about public opinion and the Spiral of Silence, The Emperor´s New Clothes tale seems a pretty good way to understand the whole concept even better. But it is not only a good example, it also shows how to end with the Spiral of Silence or how to break it. During the lecture, we read this famous tale by Hans Christian Anderson and then answered some questions in order to compare the situation held in the story with the Spiral of Silence theory:
1. How is fear of isolation represented in this tale?
People think they are stupid if they are the only ones not capable to see the emperor´s clothes. Therefore, they all decide to shut up.
2. What is the boy´s role?
The boy is the one that does not enter the spiral and he is not influenced by what the rest is saying. He is the one that shows that there is a way to break the Spiral of Silence.
