Taking into account the evolution of Communication and the different ways to communicate that have and still exist, we discussed in pairs which of those ways have supposed the most important change in history.
History of Communication:
Pre-verbal era
Speech (100.000 BCE)
Symbols (30.000 BCE)
Pictograms (5.000 BCE)
Writing (3.200 BCE)
Print – movable type (c. 1440 CE)
Photography (1827)
Telephone (1876)
Radio (1894)
Television (1930s/1950s)
Internet (1994)
Now, as I just said, we decided which of this ways of Communication where the most important. My pair and I considered writing, telephone and Internet to be the ones that made the biggest change in history. Obviusly, we did considered speech aswell, but this option was not available.
On the one hand, we thought writing was the second big step, the end of prehistory, and the beggining of history. Secondly, telephone was a relevant way of Communication for us, because it gives the opportunity to communicate with others without being physically in the same place. And finally the Internet, because is multimedia, and it includes everything.
Debate and Results:
Next, all the class put their opinions and options in common. These are the results we came up with:
Writing: III III
Only containing 25 letters we can express everything.
Internet: III II
Is fast and you can find anything you could need. It is more instant than the others and is worldwide.
Radio: II
Is cheap and it gets to a lot of people.
Photography: III
It supposed a revolution in terms of the press
Print: III
First mass medium. It gives the opportunity to print a book as many times as you want. It took a long time for people to be lliterate. However, it is still important as a technological step forward.
Telephone: II
Made communication easier and you could get feedback.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, we can assume that the most important ways of Communication are clearly: Writing, Internet, and Print.
